Looking forward to a forecasted sunny day and tailwind I was on my way by 9am. The motel I stayed in last night was classic roadside, wood panel board, single bed, no toiletries, old Admiral TV with no remote, after turning it off it glowed for 20sec! Better than my tent I guess?
A chance meeting at a gas station with the guys from 5th Canadian Rangers Patrol Group. Great guys that were on their way to a training tour through the NFLD wilderness, crossing over Table Mountain. Can’t imagine the effort involved in their journey! Trekking through the outback with 60lb packs, learning how to live off the land, kind of makes my journey seem simple. These men are often called upon with first responders in uninhabited areas and during emergency scenarios that can’t be covered by other Canadian Forces. They were based out of Gander, my next stop.
Lunch today was at a roadside canteen, they make almost as good a hotdog as the Mississaugua GC halfway! My ride was another enjoyable one, think my muscle pain from a few days ago was part poor nourishment, part lactic acid build up and part bad attitude! I keep seeing hoof prints that must be moose, but haven’t seen any yet. The moose actually isn’t native to the island, 4 were released near Gros Morne National Park back in 1904, now there is estimated to be 120,000! On a road sign warning drivers to watch for Moose they had the stat of 660 Moose hit by cars this year.
Another motel room for the night, getting lazy I think or just easing my way back to the real world? Had my first delivery pizza on the trip, oh was it good. Pig out fest on my own large pie!
