Not overly happy about taking the previous day off due to weather but everyone ensured me that it was the right choice. Headed on the road out of town at 930am, stopped at the visitor info centre, while they didn’t have a lot to add for me, they again reassured me that Wreckhouse was not to be taken lightly.
Cycled through the Table Mountains then through the famous Wreckhouse. I can see where it could be a different animal when the wind picks up, it was blowing strong when I went through, which by the way was another day of headwinds. Blowing steady 25kph with gusts over 40kph, temperature no higher than 15deg.
Returning to the saddle after a day off sometimes can prove painful for the muscles. Today was one of those days, that and a lot of solid climbing. That said, I wasn’t getting wet! There were very few places to stop for nourishment along the way but I did stop at a small “shack” of a convenience store. Two steamed hotdogs and a coke, perfect! Sat inside and chatted with a local, what I could understand at least…in my head I wonder if he thinks the same of me? Again, he told stories of Wreckhouse, RVs turned over and a guy on a motorcycle literally picked up and thrown off the road!
After an exhausting 9.5hrs on the road I found the Midway Motel, just before the rain came. And it came, and came and didn’t stop through the next day. Yea, another day in a motel waiting out weather.
